Case study 1Fresh Start School in very challenging circumstances

The school: 1500 student Fresh Start 11-18 comprehensive in very challenging circumstances. Previous school was closed due to Special Measures. Area with very high deprivation and low expectations. Pupils enter the school with very low achievement including particularly low reading ages. Very high numbers with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

The problem: GCSE results well below National Challenge. Poor progress. Large budget deficit. Four headteachers in three years. Leadership and management issues. Unsatisfactory teaching and learning. Severe staffing difficulties. Ofsted monitoring visit imminent.

The solution: Our Consultant Headteacher worked 3 days a week with the Acting Headteacher, governors and senior team to write a SEF and development plan, raise achievement, recruit and restructure staff, improve learning and teaching and reduce the deficit.

The results: GCSE results improved by 10%. Staff morale improved. A deficit recovery plan was agreed. In their two ‘Fresh Start’ monitoring visits Ofsted graded progress as ‘satisfactory’ with ‘good’ support. The Acting Headteacher was appointed to the permanent post. The school will move to completely new buildings in 2012.
